Hello all
At some point in the future I plan/hope to run a few gamesbased in Middle Earth during the First Age (i.e. thousands of years prior to the events of the Lord of the Rings) ...in particular the years that follow the Dagor Bragollach (the battle of sudden flame).
However I didn't really want to use the D&D d20 system - not because I think it's incompatible (with a few tweaks of course), but rather to get away from some of the baggage (and preconceptions) that can sometimes come along with it. However I also wanted to use something that is reasonably simple to use and easy to pick up (as I would only intend on using it to run one-shots and perhaps mini-campaigns - so please bear that in mind ).
Anyway, a while back I took a look at a game called OpenQuest (which is based on Mongoose Publishing's SRD for Runequest - which is d100 BRP style game - similar to Call of Cthulhu for example) ...and then I noticed that the entire game text is 100% OGC (open game content) - so folks can take the OpenQuest rules and use/convert them for anything they want (so long as you abide by the Open Game Licence).
...so as you can probably imagine (based on this post), I have been attempting to do just that - modifying it somewhat (and simplifying it even further) to better fit my idea of a First Age Middle Earth type game/setting.
However, due to the OGL (Open Game Licence), I can't use any of the correct names and such (like Balrogs, the Noldor, the Sindar, Beleriand, etc.) ...even in a free fan project like this. As such the book I'm working on contains no setting information whatsoever (as that can be better obtained by reading The Silmarillion for example) ...but if you are familiar with Tolkien's works then it is very obvious where I have drawn my inspiration from
As I say, I originally began compiling this book for my own personal use, but since I've gone a little overboard by drawing a cover for it etc... I thought I might share what I have done thus far in case it is of interest to anyone else.

It's still a bit of a work in progress though, and I might have to reword some of the passages, but I think the rules are pretty much done - so if it sound interesting, take a look and let me know what you think.
